Ghost in the Machine: privacy

This page describes only what the game actually does.

Sent to Anthropic's API

Your name and what you type in the chat (with the recent chat history), plus the game's own state: the clock, and which clues are found, as yes or no. The game's server passes them to Anthropic's API to generate replies and keeps no copy. Anthropic's side is covered by Anthropic's privacy policy.

Your local time, your city, the folder's name, what you type into WREN.TXT, and Wren's replies to it, are never sent.

Hosting

The game is served by Vercel, which sees your IP address to deliver the page and apply the rate limit. Vercel's side is covered by Vercel's privacy policy.

Kept in your browser

Nothing. No cookies, localStorage, IndexedDB or service worker. The browser itself remembers a notification permission you gave until you reset it.

The real folder and file (Chrome and Edge)

One new folder, Halcyon 95, inside the folder you pick, holding one file, WREN.TXT. During the story Wren may add a few more lines to it; the game only ever adds to the end of its own file. To remove it, drag the Halcyon 95 folder to the Trash (the Recycle Bin on Windows); a WREN.TXT.crswap file there is from an interrupted save and goes with the folder. Folder access ends when every tab of the game is closed. If the folder syncs (iCloud Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive), WREN.TXT syncs with it, so pick a folder only you use.

Safari and Firefox: WREN.TXT in your Downloads folder, perhaps with a number added; delete it like any download.

Notifications

Short in-story lines from the game, at most 5 a run, each also shown in the game. They come only after you click Allow notifications in that visit, and only while you're in another window. To switch them off: the site controls next to the address bar, then Notifications, then Block or Reset.

Sound and Test sound

All of the game's sound, including the Test sound button on the setup screen, is made live in your browser and only plays through your speakers. Nothing is recorded, the game never uses your microphone, and nothing about sound is sent anywhere. Test sound plays for about 2.5 seconds, or stops sooner if you click it again. Mute everything any time with Sound in the taskbar or the M key.

Voice

Only if you allow it when PAL asks: PAL's and Wren's lines are spoken through your speakers by your computer's own built-in speech voices. The game uses only voices that run on your computer, so the text is not sent to any online speech service. Nothing is recorded. Mute it any time with Sound in the taskbar or the M key.

Your camera

Only if you allow it when PAL asks: your camera picture is shown faintly in the game's screen, inside this tab, for the rest of that run. It is never recorded, saved, uploaded or sent anywhere, and the game turns the camera off at the ending (or when you close the tab).

Wren's window

Only if you turn on Allow a second window and then click Open her window: one small window from this site, called wren. The game moves it during the story and closes it at the end. It shows text only and reads nothing.

The 3:00 AM reminder

Only if you click the button on the end card: one calendar file, wren-3am.ics, saved to your Downloads. Nothing reaches your calendar unless you open that file. To remove it, delete the 3:00 AM event from your calendar and the file from your Downloads. The game sends nothing to any calendar service.

What you type into WREN.TXT

The game reads it only inside its own tab, and it never leaves that tab: not to Anthropic, not to any server.

The Start menu

It is part of the game and works only inside it. Shut Down... never shuts down, restarts or closes anything on your computer, and the menu opens only the game's own fictional files. Its Help and Shut Down replies are scripted lines written into the game; they join the chat like any other line, so they can be part of the recent chat history sent with your next message.

DEFRAG, the diary pages and Halcyon Security

All three are part of the game and happen only inside it. DEFRAG.EXE never reads, moves or defragments anything on your real disk; its grid is drawn by the game. The torn diary pages are fictional files that exist only on the game's desktop, and nothing is saved when you open one. The "Halcyon Security" alert is a scene in the story: choosing Quarantine or No changes only the game, never your real files or security settings. The red lines PAL writes while pretending to be Wren are scripted and are not added to the chat history the game sends.

Nothing deleted

The game only adds to its own file. The Recycle Bin in the game is fictional.
